This guide covers historical events that occurred in the territory of the Khiva Khanate in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, it examines: the accession of representatives of the Kungrat dynasty to the throne of the Khiva Khanate, the history of genealogies and dynasties, changes in khans, the internal governance policy and foreign diplomacy of the khanate, mutual internal conflicts and external invasions, internal and external trade and market relations, construction, cultural, educational, and daily life, as well as everyday and social processes that took place within the territory of the khanate. These aspects are revealed through the prism of five historical works by the outstanding representative of Khorezm historiography of that period, the poet, historian, and translator Muhammad Rizo Ogahi; historical works by Muhammad Yusuf Bayani, a worthy successor to the traditions of Khiva Khanate court historiography after Ogahi; historical writings by a member of the khan’s family and historian Said Hamid tura Komyob; unique historical information illuminating the history of the Khiva Khanate and its khans, recorded in the diaries of Rizoqulixon Hidoyat, who arrived in Khiva from Iran as an ambassador during the reign of the Khivan Khan Muhammad Amin Khan, titled “Safirnomai Khorezm”; as well as scientific articles by the author published in domestic and foreign publications, dedicated to the aforementioned and related topics. The guide is intended for students of higher and secondary specialized educational institutions, doctoral students, researchers, schoolchildren, as well as local and foreign tourists interested in the history of Khiva.
